Where did the week go?! I'm back in London now, and it seems we're having a tropical heatwave. V. nice. Have ditched the Venice idea (as everyone says 10 days is too long, and hubby doesn't want to travel round, he just wants to stay in one place and relax!) so looking at the Aeolian Islands off Sicily now, and this hotel is fab, and pretty reasonable too. Have e-mailed them, awaiting a reply...

Other news, have two job interviews lined up... one is an assistant psychologist job (yay!) and one is a nursing job in the STD clinic. Obviously I'd prefer the AP job, and the psychologist blokey told me I am one of 8 being interviewed out of 140 applicants, so all sounds good so far. Not sure whether or not to ditch the nursing interview and just keep plugging away with the psychologist ones. I guess I just got a bit despondent what with not having any responses for ages. Hmm.. if I get that job tho, I'd probably have to change my Master's course back aargh! Not thinking about that just yet!!

Also managed to get to the gym for the first time in about one and a half to two months, so well done me hehe. That'll make up for al the nachos I've been eating lately!

Here I am, blogging from Newcastle. Weather has been (mostly) marvellous, for a change. Apart from last night's torrential downpour (in which we unfortunately got caught...my trainers are still drying out), have been sunning myself in the back garden, and having coffees along the seafront in pavement cafes.

Had a little spend in Jigsaw yesterday (and yes, I do know we have Jigsaw in London!)... bought a skirt... saw another fab skirt in Whistles that could be a potential wedding-outfit... it's rich chocolate brown with sort of gold-coloured stitched flowers on it here and there... very nice. Also spotted a black mac (not a potential wedding outfit) in Karen Millen which was a rather pricey £250 but totally fab with a matching bag... watch this space!

More news from up north to follow...

Monday, July 19, 2004

Well, I've just about packed the suitcase ready for the expedition to Newcastle. Not exactly sure what to take, as the weather oop north is always a bit dodgy.. taking clothes for every weather eventuality just in case.

The Venice trip is not going to be a Venice trip anymore... three people have told us to NOT stay in Venice for 10 days... it's ok for short trips apparently (like 3 or 4 days max) but not 10 days. So it's all becoming a bit of a headache now... not sure if we want to spend the holiday travelling around Italy visiting about 4 different places... on one hand sounds good, but very tiring. Having a think in the meantime...

This time tomorrow, instead of LBC, I'l be nodding off to Alan Robson! Why aye pet...

Anyway... should be able to blog from The Toon, so arrivederci until the next time.

Managed to catch up on some sleep and had a blissful 12hrs sleep last night. Not off to "The Toon" until Tuesday, but have mounds of washing to do before then! Also planning to squeeze in a day trip to Edinburgh, as it's only 1.5 hrs on the train from Newcastle and The Boyfriend's never been to Scotland.

Went out to dinner last night with a couple of friends and The Boyfriend... they have been to Venice (where we were thinking of going on honeymoon) and reckon that 10 days there is too long... so now we are looking at somewhere nearby we might go to see as well. Planning to stay in venice for the full 10 nights, an duse it as a base for day trips to Verona, Treviso, etc. Have picked flights, hotel and everything.. just need confirmation from The Boyfriend and will book it! Bit of a bummer that I will have to take revision to do, as I have an exam 11th October, but hey.

Now all I need to sort out wedding-wise is the rings (well you would, wouldn't you) and the dress (ditto) and we're off!

On nights.. feeling rather sleepy indeed. Roll on Saturday morning.. I am off for about 10 days after that... going to Newcastle for a visit.

Monday, July 12, 2004

How annoying is this? I finally get an interview for an assistant psychologist's job, but I can't attend as I'm in Newcastle. And they won't reschedule. Aargh.

Sunday, July 11, 2004

Phew... just worked the weekend. People I have met: an alcoholic who has just come out of prison for drink-driving, a young guy who has smoked so much crack cocaine that he has heart failure, and an failed asylum-seeker who is just about to be deported who is trying to convince us that he is mad (presumably so he can stay!)... aah.

Did I mention we got a new dishwasher? It's fab ... so long piles of unwashed pans and plates. So long grubby mugs. Flippin' marvelous.

Made Boy George's Scrambled Tofu for brekkie - it's really rather good.
[Recipe: grate half an onion + half a carrot and fry in a small amount of oil in a wok. Crumble in about 250g of tofu. Fry for a few minutes. Serve with sourdough bread with mustard on, and top with spring onions. Serves 2. Yum!]

Cold / flu thing is on the way out, although I still feel really tired. The Boyfriend (fiance, whatever) has just gone out now (at 10.15pm!) for a coffee with The Mates... so I'm left home alone on me tod. Actually, I like this weather for staying at home, curled up under the duvet with a good book. The rain is lashing down, and there's thunder and lightning ... cosy!

After much feeling sorry for myself cos my sinuses feel like they are about to explode, I have actually done some of that essay... word count now stands at around 1300 words. Looks like my self-imposed deadline of Friday mightn't be so unattainable after all...

Have the cold from hell, and have taken today and tomorrow off to try to shift it. Still, I have plenty to be getting on with... have my essay to do (2000 words), of which the essay plan has come to over 900, so not too much left to go! Also have another job application form for a prison nurse job to fill in, so might get round to that later on. Have told college that I want to change my course, so am just waiting to hear back from them now.

And has Elsie vanished from the face of the earth??

And apparently I am an evil genius [via]

Two cups of twiggy tea later...my cold is really starting to come out now. My eyes are streaming, and all my sinuses hurt. Have taken the day off work tomorrow to recuperate. Hopefully I'll be able to get some of my essay done.

The more I think about changing my course, the more I am tempted to do so. I know when I did sociology in my degree many moons ago I quite liked it, and this MA would be half social policy half criminology... sounds pretty interesting methinks. Another night's stewing on it, and I might just contact them tomorrow... sniff sniff :o(

If anyone knows of any reasonably priced, nice restaurants in London which might be suitable for my post-wedding dine-out, do let me know. Lots of ones I am looking at look lovely, but they don't do much for vegetarians. Also, my parents are offering to put me + hubby up in a nice hotel on our wedding night (since the parents will be sharing our flat with us!)... have no idea where to start with that either!

Woke up early (mainly due to having a cold), and after a quick flick through the fabulous Karma Cookbook decided to have a walk down to Portobello Road. The proper market's not on today, but they have a fantastic Health Food Shop ("Portobello Wholefoods") so I stocked up on healthy ingredients like couscous, lentils, oats, sea vegetables and seeds (sounds exciting eh?! hehe). The shop was surpsingly busy considering it was a Monday morning... obviously that's when the healthy hippy people shop.

So I came home and had some yummy sourdough bread with honey on, and some "Bancha Tea"... this was entirely new to me, and after reading about it's digestive benefits in the Karma Cookbook, I decided to give it a go. Now, the sceptics among you might think that three quid for a bag of twigs is having a larf... but it actually taste pretty ok. Basically you just boil up a few of the twigs in a pan, and strain it, and bingo.. instant healthy tea. I did think that it was going to be disgusting, but actually it's fine. It could do with a bit of sugar in it, but since that's a macro no-no, I managed to do without. Maybe it'd be good with lemon...

For anyone who's interested, I found a macro forum on the net...so you can now meet other lentil-lovers!

Anyway, aside from trying to fight the cold with my bird-seed hippy food, I am just trying to plan an essay today, and generally take it easy and fight the cold.

Am contemplating changing my Master's course from Research Methods to Criminology and Social Policy, but am as yet undecided (quelle surprise). The unit I am currently studying can be counted towards either. My thinking is that perhaps the criminology one is a tad more interesting...Whaddya think?

After a tutorial at college this morning, I spent the afternoon cleaning out the kitchen cupboards... rock 'n' roll eh? Just applied for yet another job - this one's a nurse in a "sexual health clinic" (or in yer grann'ys day used to be the 'VD clinic'). Fingers crossed (and legs if you have any sense... geddit?! aah I'm wasted on this, I tell you...)
